about

[Original CD Liner Notes, 2005]

THE PLAYER

Tim Fatchen studied piano from a very early age with major success, but later pursued other careers. These original composition recordings mark his return to direct piano performance.

THE PLAYED

The Grand Piano was made in 1880 by John Brinsmead & Sons, London, and rescued from a barn in the vineyards of the Barossa Valley, South Australia, in the mid-1960s.

Other than hammer felts, the piano is entirely original, and is starting a slow odyssey of reconditioning. Its music has been recorded prior to any significant work or re-stringing. You can hear the piano working in places.

The synthesised keyboard is a Medeli 710C, a Chinese instrument with an edgy brilliance to its sound, a very individual quality and a counterpoise to the roundness of the old instrument's voice.

The 120 years which separate the two is no bar to the enjoyment of both.
